North Face (Nordwand) – The Movie

Posted in Movie by Andrew Spender on March 6, 2010

I’ve been looking forward to this movie for quite some time. “North Face” (or Nordwand) is based on the true story of Kurz and Hinterstoisser’s attempt in 1936 to be the first to climb the north face of the Eiger in the Swiss Alps. It’s a phenomenal movie and I recommend that you see it at the cinema right now. It’s the best movie I have seen in years (yes, you know I’m biased due to my obsession with all-things mountainous!).

I first read Kurz and Hinterstoisser’s tragic story in the definitive mountain book of all time, “White Spider” by Harrer. He was the first person to climb the north face of the Eiger in 1938. He then went AWOL from the German Army in 1939 and absconded into central Tibet. He wrote about his experience as one of the first Europeans to live in Lhasa and become a tutor of the young Dalai Lama in the incredible book “Seven Years in Tibet“, but that’s a whole other story.

Anyway….. see this movie. It’s great.
